Sesame Turkey Barbeque

So, I cook like a spaz. Sometimes I start mixing so many flavors that in the end, I don't know what made the recipe work and what was completely unnecessary.

We have turkey left that had been frozen. We've been eating those super yummy spicy turkey mash up wraps.

I decided to make turkey barbecue, except my family isn't keen on barbecue so I thought I'd try something
more Asian inspired.

The base of this recipe was Betty Crocker's barbecue sauce. As written:

BARBECUE SAUCE
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup butter
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Boil. Then stir in:
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

What I did:
3/4 cup no HFCS ketchup
1 cup water
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon black strap molasses
About 1/2 cup Iron chef orange teriyaki sauce
About 1/4 cup Newman's Own sesame ginger dressing
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon walnut oil
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
1/2 cup sesame seeds

Junk food craving

The other night I wanted a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. They are my junk food of choice.

In their absence, my husband suggested tator tots. I decided it was worth a shot. I made them, sprinkled them with iodized sea salt and organic four-color pepper, and dipped them in a sauce made 50/50 of ketchup and Fran's Red Hot Buffalo sauce.

Odd little lunch

My husband has his holiday luncheon today at work. So I prepared for my daughter:

Some italian blend mixed vegetables (zucchini, carrots, lima beans and broccoli) and a Boca vegan burger we got at the warehouse club. I heated the burger, added shredded cheddar cheese, swirls of ketchup and ranch dressing, and she loves it (even though we don't have a bun of any kind). Served with chocolate soymilk.

What happened?

I've been home, with no work, and somehow my culinary abilities/housework are not in use. Yesterday I had a conference call/webinar for the office at noon, so I whipped up an odd little lunch to keep the family fed and quiet.

The husband got pepper jack cheese, Aldi brand Ritz-style crackers, chips, and my special banana treat.

My daughter got what I call a "kiddie sandwich" which my husband thought was gross and the kid adored. I took two crackers and placed them side-by-side. I added ketchup to each, then a slice of cheddar cheese across both, and put two more crackers on top and called it a "train."

The banana treat... Well, the bananas are getting overripe so I sliced them. topped with peanut butter and added raisins to make faces.

This lunch was meant to be fun... and it was.

Mommy's scrambled eggs

Yesterday I had a blood sugar meltdown and it wasn't pretty. It was a reminder that I need to pay closer attention to my own meal schedules. I more or less need six small meals a day, but lately I've been skipping snacks. It caught up with me yesterday. It usually starts with breakfast... I skip that thinking I'll eat mt ten o'clock snack at nine and be fine... Well, yesterday I didn't eat until 11 and it threw my whole day out of whack.

By five, my husband ran to Giant to get a rapid, high protein dinner involving salad because I had in my head I wanted salad. And when I get screwed up like that, I often refuse to eat unless I get something that "looks good."

So he went to the store and bought two pre-packaged ceasar salads in the bags (on sale 2/$7), vegetarian chicken and buffalo wings (because it heats in the microwave super quick), and real chicken breasts (in case I had in my head that I wanted the real thing, and he got organic thinking I would approve... what a sweetie... and he had no idea how to read the price so he paid WAY too much, but it's the thought that counts.)

He spent $22. And made a delicious salad with the buffalo wings strips and laid into it. And the kit included shaved slices of asiago cheese... Mmmmm... We're having the second batch for lunch today.

I'm trying to be more careful today. We had homemade raisin bread toast with

coffee at 7:30. (The loaf of sticky roll dough that I didn't ice or cut into buns.) At 9, I made myself two scrambled eggs (with soy milk) with parsley, the leftover garlic pepper seasoning from the salad last night, and grated asiago. Served with a side of ketchup and a pinch of coarse sea salt. And technically, I used extra virgin olive oil in the pan instead of no-stick spray. Figured I could use the healthy fat.
