Last week when we shopped at Target to get a few things after my opening cashier shift (which I completed with near perfect speed scores with a raging infection in my jaw bone, if you recall), my husband noticed a funky new type of Arm and Hammer cat litter on sale and swore we had a Target coupon for it.
No big deal, I said. I had my Thursday shift and could get some.
I forgot.
So today I have a closing shift in the café and I don't relish lugging 28 pounds of cat litter around the store before, during or after my shift.
I went with my husband while daughter was in dance.
We spent $47.09 and got:

Pet supply shopping at Target
I had several coupons for Target expire, and I needed a few cat items so we picked up some odds and ends after my 12-4:30 shift. Child needed Zyrtec.
I had a budget of $70, but spent $92. Had to transfer some funds from savings. I literally had to walk out of the store before I finished in the Market section.
Too many good deals. And how can you say no when you can eat them?
- Archer Farms imported from
Belgium, dark chocolate covered biscuits (sounds like Petit Écolier to me), two boxes on clearance for $1.18 each
- ground Italian sausage, about a pound, on sale for $1.55 (regular $3.09)
- fresh express Veggie Lovers salad, regular price, $2.99 on sale for $1.99
- Campbell's condensed Cream of Chicken soup, on clearance for 35 cents, regular $1.02 (for some reason my daughter begged for this)
- pretzel rolls, $2.49
- beef round steaks, 3, $3.35, $3.18, $3.52 (normally $5.49)
- three boxes of Boo Berry cereal, on clearance for $2.26 each, minus $1.50 coupon

Aldi ramble
Meanwhile, my daughter may be going as vegan as possible. It's always seemed to help in the past.
My husband has off work today so he's run me ragged with home repair and errands. We have $52 to make it until next Friday, and he's scheduled for a haircut in the a.m. He wanted to head to Aldi, so I gave us a budget of $25.
We spent $22.37.
I noticed Aldi has 14 pounds of cat litter for $3.99. That's cheaper than Target's 27 pounds for $8.89 but with my discount it's close.
We bought:
- 2 pounds green grapes, 2.98
- bananas, 43 cents a pound, $0.99
- wheat ritz-style crackers, $1.79

Kitty bargains
We have a 12-year-old cat and an almost six-month-old kitten. This means lots of litter and dry food. I try very hard not to feed the cats any food with corn as a main ingredient and that's tough on the budget.
At Target tonight I started with litter. I used to get my litter at Sam's Club but their prices have been going up AND the size of the package shrinking, so by the time you consider membership fees, impulse buys and my employee discount at Target, it didn't seem like a bargain at Sam's.
Boots and Barkley cat litter at Target was $9.39 for 27 pounds and Tidy Cat multi-cat litter was $11.99 for 35 pounds. I got out my calculator and did some figuring. The Target brand, Boots and Barkley, worked out to be 34.77 cents per pound, while the name brand came in at 34.25 cents per pound.
At this point, my colleagues noticed me and wondered what I was doing so I explained. They seemed in awe that I would do such a thing. They weren't even sure how to do the math to find out which was cheaper. I explained.
Then to cat food! Iams was on sale, multiple varieties, $10.99 for the 6.8 pound bag. Normally it's $12.79. PLUS with two bags you got a $5 gift card free. I bought three bags of kitten chow and one bag regular.
My bill after discounts was $51.64 plus I now have $10 in Target gift cards.

We had dinner at the Target café today, after my shift. I also worked yesterday so I had made today's sandwiches. My husband and I each had a ham and swiss sandwich, and our daughter had a chicken marinara flatbread. We also got an order of fries and some beverages. Dinner after my discounts was $11.65.
Now, I had $27 in the checkbook and transferred $50 from my savings.
Then we went shopping.

The Detergent Debate
I'm not exactly a fan of Wal*Mart and its business practices, nor have I set foot in a Wal*Mart store in years. But I do have a Sam's Club me membership, which makes me a hypocrite. I admit that upfront.
For a long time, Sam's Club offered the convenience of BIG containers of cat litter (nice in a two-cat house) and dishwasher and laundry detergent and peanut butter, all consumed in mass quantities when you have a small child. Oh! and tissues!
I am considering dropping my membership because I ethically don't like the company and more and more the "good deals" I used to see are available now not only at Sam's but also at Wegmans, Target and other stores which are trying to compete.
I always knew some items at Sam's weren't cheap, and some, because of their bulk, would rot before my family would use them. Now, since I work at Target, I am forced to see more merchandise and what it costs. I have always been aware of what I spend for stuff, but never before have I had an opportunity to study the shelves for basic household items at a Target.
Last week, I bought dishwasher soap at Target. Yesterday, my husband bought more at Sam's Club.
I'm fairly certain inlaid $2.48 for 75 ounces of Up and Up dishwasher soap. My husband paid $7.98 for two 96-ounce bottles.
That's 4.15 cents an ounce at Sam's and 3.3 cents at Target. That's not include the membership fee at Sam's or deducting my employee or red card discounts from Target.

Ten Minute Shopping
So, last night on my half-hour meal break I ran through Target and grabbed a few things.
The cat needed some wet cat food. He doesn't like the chicken flavor and that's all we have. So I got him five cans of fishy flavors. (4 cans at 42 cents, 1 at 37 cents).
Neither us nor the tortoise has had greens lately, so I checked out the produce aisle. Sad really, the state of that green stuff. But, it's very cold and the tortoise is picky about eating right now so I grabbed the least brown romaine lettuce on clearance for $1, regularly $1.99. After all, I'm feeding it to her right away and it was still in a state I would eat so...
Then, I got into the fruit because I noticed raspberries. They were a tad wet, so they were reduced to $1.50 for the 6 ounce container. They didn't look moldy or rotten, just overwet. And raspberries last five minutes in my house. So, I bought 2 containers. Ate one last night when I got home. Shared some with the tortoise. They were fine, just wet.
Bought a pound of strawberries, $2.49 (sale price, but not clearanced)
Four bananas at 19 cents each.
Some flavored water, four bottles for $1.99. Primarily purchased because I forgot my water bottle. Disappointed because they have sucralose and I was hoping for no artificial sweeteners.
And panty liners.

The end of a fun weekend
My apologies for not keeping up with this blog over the weekend, but our diet has been mediocre because the daughter and I had a little bug. Nothing serious. Nothing gastro-intestinal, thank goodness, but enough to keep my daughter up at night with a cough and enough to make me sound like Marge Simpson's sister, Selma Beauvoir.
I'm enjoying a cup of Easy Now Traditional Medicinal tea because the French professor at Lafayette emailed me about the papers I asked him to read. He says my French is excellent but I'm sure he's being polite.
To keep this vaguely on topic, I'll mention that we had lunch with our German friends today and were treated to an apple walnut salad, krautwickel and garlic mashed potatoes which our daughter loved.
On Saturday, before I fell ill, we made a romantic trip to the pizza parlor and the warehouse club. I was going to report the items on the receipt, but most seem pet or school related.
